Best Crypto Portfolio Tracker Apps in 2026

CoinMarketCap, CoinStats and CoinGecko compared for live prices, market data, alerts and portfolio tracking without handing over access to funds.

Checking a price and placing a trade are two different jobs, and keeping them in separate apps is a useful safety habit: a tracker never needs permission to move anything. One group answers questions about the market, thousands of coins and exchanges at a glance. The other answers a more personal question, pulling holdings scattered across wallets and exchanges into one view with the real return calculated. They also differ on how much trust they ask for, from none at all to read-only keys, and on the conflicts behind their data. The 2 apps in this guide take one approach each; the FAQs also cover the independent aggregator many people use alongside them.

    CoinMarketCap: Crypto Tracker

    CoinMarketCap, LLC
    Free to downloadApp Store 4.8

CoinMarketCap is the industry reference for prices and market caps across thousands of coins, with watchlists and alerts that need no account connection.

It is the default place to check a price, a ranking or where a coin trades, covering thousands of cryptocurrencies and exchanges, and you can build watchlists and price alerts without connecting a single real account or granting access to funds. That makes it the lowest-risk way to follow the market daily. Two caveats matter. It is owned by Binance, an obvious conflict of interest around listings and rankings, and the density of data is intimidating when you are starting out. Promotional notifications are also frequent and worth disabling.

    Pros

    • The industry reference for market data
    • Thousands of coins and exchanges covered
    • Watchlists without connecting accounts

    Cons

    • Binance ownership creates a conflict of interest
    • Dense interface for newcomers
    • Frequent promotional notifications

    CoinStats: Crypto Portfolio

    COINSTATSAPP LLC
    Free to downloadApp Store 4.8

CoinStats connects read-only to your exchanges and wallets and shows everything you hold on one screen, with the real portfolio return already calculated.

Where CoinMarketCap watches the market, CoinStats watches you: link exchanges and wallets, and balances held in several places appear consolidated in a single view, with performance worked out rather than guessed. That consolidation is the feature the market-data apps do not offer, and the reports make tax preparation less painful. Consolidation is also the risk: you are trusting a third party with account access, which is why only read-only keys should ever be used, and some wallets fail to sync reliably. Deeper features sit behind the paid tier, so the free version is a taster.

    Pros

    • Exchanges and wallets consolidated in one view
    • Calculates your real portfolio return
    • Reports that help with tax filing

    Cons

    • Linking accounts means trusting a third party
    • Advanced features are paywalled
    • Sync fails with some wallets

Questions & answers

Can I track a portfolio without giving access to my funds?

Yes, and that is the sensible default. CoinMarketCap and CoinGecko let you type positions in manually and connect nothing at all. CoinStats supports read-only API keys, which can see balances but cannot place trades or make withdrawals. Never give a tracking app keys with withdrawal permissions; no price alert is worth that level of access. Manual entry is more work, but for a handful of holdings it removes the trust question entirely.

CoinMarketCap or CoinGecko?

CoinMarketCap has wider coverage and is the de facto standard the industry quotes, but Binance ownership is a genuine conflict when projects are listed and ranked. CoinGecko is independent and layers in development and community metrics, which help separate an actively maintained project from an abandoned one. Neither is strictly better, which is why plenty of people keep both open: the standard for prices, the independent one for a second opinion.

How are cryptocurrencies taxed?

It depends on your country, so treat nothing here as advice. Most jurisdictions tax gains from selling or swapping crypto as capital gains, and several also require reporting holdings kept abroad. CoinStats reports help gather transactions into one place, but the rules are complex and change often; filing correctly means talking to a tax adviser familiar with local law. This guide compares tracking tools; it cannot determine what you owe.

Are tracking apps themselves safe?

Pure trackers that never hold funds are low risk by design. The exposure appears at the edges: when you connect an account via API, or jump from the tracker into an exchange app. Use read-only keys, enable two-factor authentication everywhere, reuse no passwords, and ignore any message asking for keys or seed phrases, however urgent it sounds. The most common attack does not target the software; it targets the person using it.
