Offline travel

Build an offline travel kit before you leave

Choose the map around how you will travel after arrival. Download the area, keep a separate copy of your first route and accommodation address, and rehearse while reliable internet is still available.

Check what offline navigation actually covers

Google Maps' iPhone help describes offline driving when the whole route lies within a downloaded area. Offline transit, cycling and walking directions are unavailable, as are live traffic and alternative routes. Downloads are unavailable in some countries or regions.

Organic Maps lists offline search and walking, cycling and driving navigation using downloaded OpenStreetMap data. Offline capability does not establish that every path, opening time or access condition is accurate.

Suggested workflow

Prepare for the first day, not just the city centre

We suggest securing the arrival-to-accommodation journey first. Check the map and trip documents separately so a downloaded area cannot hide a missing booking or address.

  1. Write down full addresses for arrival, accommodation and a backup meeting point, including the local-language version. Check each map location.
  2. Choose the tool for your travel mode. Download the whole arrival route and plausible detours, then check completion and available storage.
  3. Keep bookings, essential phone numbers, dates and the first day's plan in a local location you can find. Follow the issuer's rules for dynamic tickets or codes; a screenshot is not automatically a valid ticket.
  4. If relying on offline translation, confirm that the required language pack has downloaded in that app and try a useful sentence. This guide does not establish offline support for every language.

Suggested workflow

Rehearse before leaving reliable Wi-Fi

This is a suggested check for your own device, not a test we have performed. Temporarily disconnect somewhere you can easily reconnect; a download icon alone is not the result you need.

  1. Open the map, search for your accommodation and zoom into nearby streets to check coverage.
  2. Try a route using your actual travel mode. Do not treat Google Maps' offline driving support as walking navigation.
  3. Open your booking details and phone numbers. Check that you saved usable content rather than an online-only webpage shortcut.
  4. Reconnect, fix anything missing and keep an address or meeting point you can describe without the map.

Suggested workflow

Check live changes with current information

Use the offline kit for saved information and basic orientation. Road closures, last departures, business hours and changed reservations still need checking when you have a connection.

Before departure, inspect download status and update prompts. A changed itinerary needs a fresh coverage check rather than an assumption carried over from a previous trip.

Before you finish

  • Your chosen offline feature supports your travel mode.
  • Coverage includes arrival to accommodation, and addresses and plans open while disconnected.
  • Essential information has a local copy; dynamic tickets and live changes receive a separate check.
