Costs and subscriptions

Read an app's real cost before starting a trial

A Get button or zero download price only describes the download. Identify the action you need, then check whether it requires a purchase, what kind of purchase it is and when another charge would occur.

Distinguish the purchase types

Apple distinguishes subscriptions, non-consumable purchases and consumable purchases. Subscriptions provide access for a period and renew automatically unless cancelled. Non-consumables include one-time unlocks; consumables can include credits that run out.

An in-app-purchase label does not establish that everyone needs a subscription. The checked Chinese and US LocalSend listings, for example, label their purchase items Donation. Read the actual items before inferring the business model.

Suggested workflow

Check the cost of one real task

We suggest a task checklist instead of a single “is it free?” question. Record the storefront so a price from another region cannot quietly become your expected charge.

  1. Name the action, such as scanning three pages and exporting a PDF, plus unacceptable restrictions such as a watermark or a low export limit.
  2. Review the download price, purchase list and developer explanation in your store. Mark missing information unknown.
  3. Try a harmless sample through the final action. Note payment prompts without confirming a purchase just to test it.
  4. If you decide to buy, read the confirmation sheet for billing period, currency, post-trial amount and account. Do not rely only on a banner's monthly-equivalent figure.

Record the trial deadline and cancellation route

Apple advises cancelling at least 24 hours before a trial ends if you do not want it to renew. On iPhone, open Settings, tap your name, then Subscriptions and the item. A missing Cancel button or an expiry message can mean it is already cancelled.

That route concerns Apple-managed subscriptions. For purchases made directly through a developer or another provider, confirm cancellation with the company that bills you. Do not treat deleting an app as cancellation confirmation.

Suggested workflow

Keep a record you can check later

We suggest recording the app, purchasing account, billing provider, period, expiry date and cancellation status. Set a reminder early enough to resolve problems before the deadline.

AppFavi's free picks describe verified download prices, not the absence of in-app purchases. A confirmed temporary discount also needs earlier paid evidence in the same store and currency; missing history is not evidence of a price drop.

Before you finish

  • You checked the feature needed to finish the task, not just the download price.
  • Purchase type, period, currency and post-trial amount are clear; unknown does not mean free.
  • Cancellation is confirmed by the billing provider, with time left before the deadline.
